Ace Hotel Goes To Michigan

So it appears as if the Ace Hotel has started their own "Outdoor Club," and for their maiden voyage they chose my home state of Michigan. Back in February, Ryan Huber of Madison-based Context gathered together such explorers of style as Ace Hotel NY curator Jou-Yie Chou and Andrea Westerland of Fjallraven for an adventure into the great white north. Littered with imagery ranging from pristine forests to local cuisine (think ox heart sandwiches) to the occasional pull of bourbon, Annemarie Ahearn of Salt Water Farm provides an entertaining account of their trip. Being from Michigan and having dealt with relentless winters, warped accents and "recreational" snowmobilers, I must say that reading about the team's mild suffering was almost as pleasurable as the images and ideas for next winter's personal outfitting.

Aircraft Boneyards

While Banksy is off galavanting around L.A. for his much-anticipated movie premier, I've found myself strangely enamored by these Google-Earth images of "aircraft boneyards" recently posted by Nick Maggio over at A Time to Get. I'm completely obsessed with the fantasy elements of these photos: it's almost as if you can feel the desert heat pulsating off the shrapneled steel. To see such monumental machines resting quietly in symmetrical rows of mystery and ruin is both haunting and strangely elegant. And the desert backdrop doesn't hurt either. Road trip anyone?

Subject Matter: Day Bags

Jeff Ricker's handcrafted bags provide countless reasons for us all to plan a day trip to the lake or beach, with a weathered look and feel that will most definitely provide double-takes and numerous people asking "where'd you get that?" Ricker balances vintage materials, modern aesthetics and impeccable detailing to create bags fit for just about any occasion. My personal favorite is the "Camp Buck" (above), which takes the US Navy bag to another level with near-indestructible canvas duck (that only gets better with age) and beautifully understated military striping - all, of course, individually signed and numbered. And for those of us who live on bike, allow me to introduce the Fjallraven Vintage Backpack, which not only continues my obsession with all things Scandanavia, but also the sweet sounds of form and function with waterproof canvas and sturdy leather strapping. You can see more of Ricker's craft here, and check out more from Fjallraven at Assembly NY.

Iron Heart Denim Rider Jacket

Face it: summer is knocking on the door and thoughts of motorcycle trips are dancing through all our collective heads. Leave it to Japan's Iron Heart to take classic Americana dreams and fantasties to another level with their new 22oz. denim riding jacket. More than anything, I have to give them credit for the mere fact that this jacket bleeds gear-headed functionality while carefully balancing approachability with filthy amounts of street etiquette (see the zipper detail). While the bike usually inspires the attire, I'm willing to guess more than a few people might buy a bike just to have an excuse for this fine piece of craftsmanship.
